Wasu Koysiripong, A Chinese descendant in Thailand who can speak Chinese
I’m from Thailand.
Firstly, you have to understand the demographics of my country. About 15% of our population is “identifiable ethnic Chinese”, including myself, and perhaps as many as 35% is “unidentifiable ethnic Chinese” or “people with partial Chinese ancestry”. That means about half of our population has Chinese genes. I’ll use the terms Thai Chinese for these people.

About the feeling towards the PRC, the Thais no matter from which ethnic group generally feel good towards the PRC as well as other countries. However, among the Thai Chinese, there are some who are very pro-China and some who are very anti-China. The anti-China ones are usually pro-Japan. It is quite interesting that the anti-China people in my country are mostly ethnic Chinese themselves.
就对中国的感觉而言,泰国人总体上对中国以及其他国家感觉良好。然而,在泰国华人中,有一些非常亲华,而有一些非常反华。反华的一般都是亲日的。有意思的是泰国的反华人士大体上都是华人自己。
Chen Zhigong (陳治功)
Those anti-China Chinese basically fled China because of PRC’s victory in civil war or due to the cultural revolution, thus they are extremely antiChina. That’s what we call CCP-PTSD.
这些反华的华人主要是因为中国赢得内战或者六七十年代而逃到泰国的,所以他们才那么反华。
Wasu Koysiripong
That’s true for Taiwan and Hong Kong, but not Thailand.
I’ve never met or heard of any Thai Chinese who or whose predecessor fled from the Cultural Revolution.
Interestingly, most of the Thai Chinese who or whose predecessors fled China because of the CCP’s victory are rather pro-China. These people came to Thailand with the KMT’s 93rd Division (国民党93师). They are a minority of the Thai Chinese who can still speak Chinese (mostly only on a basic level) and they still feel Chinese nationalistic. They are the only major group of Chinese migrants who came after the Second Sino-Japanese War. Many of them do business with the Chinese nationals, both from the Mainland and Taiwan. They are not anti-China because they know that the civil war is now over, China has changed dramatically and China is their motherland after all.

And you might be surprised to know that for so many Thai Chinese, the Chinese culture in their impression is very superstitious and feudalistic. For them, the Chinese culture is all about worshipping gods and the deceased ancestors, Wu Xing 五行, or Feng Shui 风水 and ridiculous ideas such as “daughters are like toilet bowls in front of the house” because their predecessors migrated to Thailand during the Qing Dynasty era and their parents still to keep the traditions. This is also a reason why they don't feel good about China.
